The Synchrotron Radiation (SR) School aims to provide postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers, who have limited experience, with a broad-based introduction to many of the different types of experiments conducted using SR techniques.

The Diamond SR School It is largely aimed at physical scientists, but life scientists are welcome to apply. The school gives the attendees the opportunity to obtain hands-on practical experience of performing an experiment on several of the Diamond Beamlines.

The format of the school will include: three days of lectures, tutorials and poster sessions, plus two days dedicated to remote experiments on a range of Diamond Beamlines (each attendee will be able to participate in at least two different experiments).

From the event website: Drs Kun Yan and Simon Hunt from the Department of Materials, The University of Manchester will co-present this seminar.

Dr Kun Yan has accumulated some experience using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques to investigate the phase transformation and strain analysis of advanced alloys under both ambient environment and extreme temperatures and loading conditions. Dr Simon Hunt uses synchrotron radiation to examine the physical properties of Earth forming rocks and minerals at extreme pressure and temperature conditions.

XFELs: perspectives and opportunities for Danish science

Since LCLS started operation in the hard x-ray regime in 2010, some areas of the scientific use of XFELs are maturing, while other areas are still taking shape. With new facilities opening and existing facilities being upgraded, the prospects are bright for the next 10 years.

This workshop brings together Danish researchers and scientists from XFEL facilities to discuss past experiences, new opportunities and new ideas for research using the ultrabright and ultrashort x-ray flashes provided by these exciting new x-ray sources.
